Who needs grandparentage testing?
Grandparents who have any reason to doubt whether their grandchild is really their biological grandchild can have peace of mind through grandparentage DNA testing. Read more about the scenarios many of our clients face.
A grandparentage test can be done privately, if you only want the results to satisfy a personal curiosity. You can also take a legal test, if you need to use the results for legal purposes (child support cases, custody suits, etc.).
My son has a child, but he is not married to the mother, and the child does not look like my son at all. My son has never questioned the child’s paternity—can I find out if it really is my grandchild without including my son in the testing?
Yes, you can take a grandparentage test. The test is very easy and painless, and the results are confidential. Both of the father’s biological grandparents should participate in the test with the child. You will collect buccal (cheek) swabs and send the collected samples to the laboratory. The results will be mailed directly to you.
Who is tested?
Typically a grandparentage test is conducted with the child, mother, and both possible biological grandparents on the father’s side. However, a test can also be done with the maternal grandparents if there is a question about maternity. In either case, the cost of the test is the same and the results equally accurate and reliable.
Can a test be done without involving the mother?
Typically, the mother is included in the grandparentage test, but we can perform a test without the mother’s participation. The testing process is slightly more extensive, so it will take longer for you to receive the results.
How are samples collected?
For a private test, we will send you a DNA collection kit containing cheek swabs, which you will use to painlessly collect DNA samples from those participating in the test. For more information, read Private Collection. For a legal test, we will set up an appointment for you at one of our convenient locations, and your samples will be collected by a trained professional using the same painless cheek swab method.
How fast will I get my results?
Once the laboratory receives your samples, the testing process will be completed in 9 business days if the mother participates, 14 days without her participation. At that time, we will send you your results via first-class mail. You may receive your results sooner via email, fax, or phone.
