About Maternal Grandparent DNA Testing
A Maternal Grandparentage Test is usually requested in cases where a child who was separated from the mother at an early age has established contact with possible grandparents, and would like to confirm this relationship through a DNA test. The first option in situations like this is a maternity test to confirm the relationship between the child and mother, but if the possible mother is not available to take the test, a maternal grandparentage test is a conclusive and reliable alternative.

DNA Testing and Inheritance
As parents, you and your spouse contribute equally to your daughter’s DNA, so that one-half of her DNA comes from you, and the other half, from your spouse. Your daughter, in turn, contributes to half of her child’s DNA. Therefore, half of your grandchild’s DNA comes from you, the grandparents, through your daughter.

A grandparentage DNA test can help you conclusively determine if you are the biological grandparents by determining if half of the possible grandchild’s DNA indeed comes from you.

Requirements for Grandparentage Testing
A grandparentage test requires the participation of both possible grandparents and the child. If only one maternal grandparent is available, please see our other testing options.

Participation of the child's father is encouraged—with his participation, we can easily eliminate his contribution to half of the child's DNA, leaving the other half to test for presence of the grandparents' DNA contribution. A fatherless grandparentage test is more costly and could take longer to yield results.

Samples Collected
In a DNA grandparentage test, the laboratory only needs cheek swab samples from the test participants. In a private grandparentage test, you can collect the samples yourselves, simply and painlessly, in the privacy of your own home. In a legal grandparentage test, you need to have your samples collected by a trained professional. Please click on the links for these pages to learn more.

How long it takes
A grandparentage test, with the participation of the father, is completed 9 working days after we receive all samples in the laboratory. A fatherless grandparentage test is completed in 14 working days, because it requires additional analysis.
